A crown for the day

Or: Switch me off – Stefano!

To add the crowning touch to your day, dine at the 4**** Hotel Marica in Eggen. A tale of happiness - and of a princess.

I would not necessarily describe myself as a princess in “normal” life...

...but rather as a hectic workaholic - but something caused me to want to press the “off” button. The background? Well, the princess in me wanted to enjoy the fine weather! In addition, a charming Italian gentleman had promised me an extravagant evening: a fairy tale on a grand scale at the Hotel Marica!

After an exhausting but wonderful day’s skiing, I am looking forward to the crowning glory of my day: dinner With princess mode now duly ON, I get ready for the evening in the stylish bathroom of my hotel room and choose my highest heels to match my mood.

Sparkling and untamed

The aperitivo at the bar draws me into the pleasant atmosphere with the other guests: a cheerful giggle here, skiing tales there - wonderful! Carola, my hostess, greets me with a warm smile and has a suitably scintillating recommendation: a South Tyrolean sparkling wine, a 2016 Peter Zemmer Millesimato.

I sink into my shimmering thoughts and (metaphorically speaking) into my glass - oh, it's already empty. Now I go to the dinner table, where Gabriel, the junior manager, promptly serves the first dish:
“homemade rosemary bread with lemon butter”.

Gabriel has of course thought ahead and brings me the wine list...

but I prefer to rely on Carola’s recommendation: a Puntay Kalterer See 2015 to accompany me through dinner - a very charming companion, by the way. But not the charming Italian whom I mentioned earlier: his name is Stefano, and he is the head chef here at the Marica. It is he who has crowned me... or rather my day! His homemade rye tagliatelle with a ragout of game with root vegetables is a feast fit for a king!
It is also adorned with a carrot which - I can hardly believe my eyes - is actually carved into the shape of a crown. In my mind this crown has long been sitting on my head! I love how the tangy game stew goes with the soft tagliatelle on my fork. Exactly to my taste: a ragout that has been finely chopped by Stefano rather than simply being minced! Fantastic!

Soft centres, subtle kings

“Clink-clink” - my carriage? No, the ladies at the next table are toasting “a great day’s skiing”.
The next course brings me right back to my very special evening: a pomegranate granité! The name promises a royal pleasure... I take my fruity-fresh glass in my hand and toast the ladies - yes, we have truly deserved it.

The break in the menu has allowed me to take a short rest from my pleasure marathon and I gaze to my left. “How is the patient?” enquire Carola and Gabriel one after the other, how is the lady with the minor skiing injury? Well, she is in really good hands here! A sip of Puntay and the main course now follows: a deer steak done rare with a juniper jus on red cabbage, cranberry sauce and pureed celeriac. The king of the local forests is just to my taste! The red cabbage, tender but still al dente, sweetens the combination of powerful game and silkily delicate celeriac, whose colours also perfectly match my princess mood!

The crowning glory

Admittedly my crown is no longer sitting quite so straight after two more glasses of Puntay, but it doesn't have to. Now comes the dessert: nougat dumplings and coconut rapée served with vanilla sauce and ice cream. Nougat dumplings! Another culinary coronation! My day as a princess is complete - and indeed perfect.

I can say no more than that, if you wish to add the crowning touch to your day, take the opportunity to dine at the Hotel Marica. For my part I will certainly be doing this more often from now on. It’s not as if I treat myself to anything else! ;-)

Reviews

HF

"We stayed in a very large room, with very spacious bathroom and separate toilet. The owners are very welcoming and helpful in giving tips for our snowshoe hiking (the area is great for winter and snowshoe hiking). The breakfast was excellent and the dinners were delicious, every course was of a very high quality. We have stayed in many Vitalpina hotels (all very good) but this one stands out for service, hospitality, atmosphere and delicious food!"
