Marica's Mountain Bike Rides
Marica's Mountain Bike Rides
We, Manfred, Carola and Gabriel, are enthusiastic mountain bikers and certified guides. We will be pleased to advise you about individual rides and accompany you on our guided mountain bike and hiking excursions in the mountains. Nevertheless, there are a few things that you should know: Manfred comes from Eggen, whereas Carola comes from the Karer Pass. Between these two locations is our local mountain, the Latemar. Now the Latemar is usually photographed from the front (according to Carola!) with views of Lake Karer, i.e. from the Karer Pass. This means that this side is the most famous side and therefore the front. However our landlord sees things rather differently, since logically for him the front of the Latemar faces Eggen. So pay attention to who is giving you advice - as it is possible that you will be sent from front to back, when you planned to do it the other way, or perhaps vice versa. If you want to be on the safe side, then please speak to Kathrin, our secretary. Her father cycled a downhill route against a skier on the TV show "Wetten Dass…?" (You Bet), which automatically makes her knowledgeable about all things mountain bike-related. And... she comes from Birchabruck, which is exactly halfway between Eggen and the Karer Pass, which might mean that her information is more reliable anyway.
The BANKLRUNDE route (as a taster)
Ideal as a warm up ride or short training ride with a great mix of roads, gravel tracks, single trails, easy climbs and short downhill stretches. Distance: approx. 20 km Altitude difference: 650 m Ride time: approx. 2 hours Difficulty: easy to moderate ride Snack stops: none In the village head west as far as the Kobhof. A superb single trail (no. 7) takes you to the Löwen Inn. Once there, follow the main road and just before Welschnofen after the bend turn right over the bridge onto the gravel track (no. 10 A). Continue along the stream and up the mountain via the winding trail to the "Schang". Continue along trail no. 27 and then at the junction turn right onto no. 25. After 1.5 km head through a forestry gate and then approx. 300 m further uphill onto trail no. 8. A wonderfully relaxing cycle path now leads to the Bewallerhof. From here it is a 15 minute ride by road by to Eggen. Alternatively you can follow the "Sam" (trails 7 and S) along a swift descent through the woods and back to Eggen via the Grotthof.

The EGGENTAL ALPINE PASTURES - European Cup race route (if only it wasn't for the climb...)
A route that is particularly strenuous at the start with a lot of climbing but magnificent views right across our skiing area directly below the Latemar. Due to the difficult downhill stretches, this ride is only suitable for experienced bikers. Distance: 33 km Altitude difference: 1650 m Ride time: 6 to 7 hours Difficulty: strenuous day-long ride Snack stops: various huts on the Eggental pastures From the hotel take the short cut to the Pfarrer and then go directly onto Städtlweg (No. 0) to the Fleckerhof. There take the gravel track (no. 8) to the Wagger and from there head along the "Schwand", the steep old trail no. 0 as far as Obereggen. Ride for a short distance along the asphalt road to the Hotel Cristall. Here go through the forestry gate onto the Herrenwald trail and afterwards on the very steep trail no. 22 to the Epircher Laner Alp. From here take the slightly more leisurely route along the alpine meadow track to Zischg Alp. Just above the hut the route continues uphill on a great trail (marked no. 504) to the Passo Feudo at 2,200 metres above sea level. Magnificent view over the Bellunese Dolomites! From here follow trail no. 22 to the Monte Agnello; after a steep descent the trail leads back to the Zischg Alp. Continue to the Reiterjoch and then take the difficult downhill stretch on trail no. 9 / J (alternatively along the forest trail to the Absamstube) then continue uphill towards Golfrion and on trail no. 10 to the Durabühl - a wonderful place to take a rest and enjoy the view! Continue along trail no. 10 (lots of roots) to the end and directly into Obereggen. There is a choice of several routes back to Eggen ranging from leisurely to challenging. |

The FERDLRUNDE route (actually so good it should be a secret…)
A moderately long, not too difficult ride especially suited to poor or cold weather or when there is still snow at greater altitudes. Distance: 41 km Altitude difference: 1300 m Ride time: 6 to 7 hours Difficulty: moderate day-long ride with great single trails Snack stops: Unteregger inn, Lärchenwald inn From Eggen follow the main road towards Bolzano as far as the turn off for Gummer or along the old church path past the Thalerhof as far as Birchabruck and then to the junction. Here turn left along the gravel track on the old Eggental road still towards Bolzano. After approx. 1.5 km turn right over a small bridge and then left uphill and straight across the main road towards Halser. This old connecting road (which is also marked 0 later on) leads to the asphalt road to Kardaun. Follow this road uphill around several bends for approx. 4 km to the "Oberöhlgart" wine tavern. Above the car park take the forest trail signposted Z. This route, with its wonderful views, rises and falls gently as far as the "Kaserbild" junction (a small chapel with a historic background). Directly behind the chapel on the northern side the route continues along trail L to the Tschigghof. Again there is a wonderful panoramic viewpoint overlooking the surrounding peaks of the Eggental Valley. Continue along the asphalt road to the Lärchenwald inn. Just below the inn is the beginning of trail no. 3. Follow this to the junction with trail 2A (also known as Taufenweg). A fantastic trail towards Welschnofen to trail 2F then downhill to the junction with trail A. Take the main road to Bolzano and after 1 km, just after the Löwen inn, take the somewhat steep trail 7 back to Eggen. |

The KOHLERNRUNDE (The power tour… with a shortcut)
By making use of the Kohlerer cable car (the world's first cable car), this strenuous day-long ride offers the opportunity to reduce the amount of climbing by around half, thus enabling less experienced bikers to enjoy this fabulous trip in the Bolzano basin and over the Deutschnofen plateau. Distance: 46 km Altitude difference: 900 or 1700 metres Ride time: 5 to 6 hours Difficulty: moderate or strenuous day-long ride Snack stops: Schneiderwiesen inn or Wölflhof wine tavern From the centre of the village of Eggen first simply follow Eggentalerstrasse to Kardaun. The roundabout on the main road offers direct access to the cycle path towards the town centre. Cross over Kampiller bridge under the motorway and through to the Kohlern cable car station. The following 9 km and approx. 900 metres of climbing can be done via the winding tarmac road, or in more leisurely fashion by cable car. From the village of Bauernkohlern take the asphalt road to the Schneiderwiesen, a great place to stop for a break to regain your strength. From here follow the easily navigable gravel trail marked no. 1 as far as the Toten Moos. First continue along trail no. 1 and then later on trail E5, which has wonderful views to both left and right, as far as the Wölflhof - also a nice wine tavern. One possible and rewarding detour is from the Toten Moos to the Rotenstein lookout point. Here the view is of the Bolzano basin 1200 metres below. 100 m after the Wölflhof turn left and slightly uphill past lovely meadows and forests to the Unterkaplun and via the local roads to the "Bar Luise" junction in Deutschnofen. Ride through the business park up to the Daum and then continue to the Bielhof. Follow route 8 downhill across country to the Schwarzenbach inn. Cross straight over the road and continue along trail 8 (Tremmlweg) to Rauth. From here it's a final short climb to Lagarn, then continue to the Weisshof and just before the Bielelerhof take the old church path (no. 7), which leads steeply back to Eggen.

The MARICA LATEMARRUNDE route (across borders…)
There are several ways of riding around the Latemar mountain massif, which stretches over the Eggental, Fassatal and Fleimstal valleys. The Marica-Latemar circular route avoids the extremely steep and sometimes dangerous descent from the Passo Feudo into the Fleimstal Valley. We ride to Pampeago-Tesero and along the "Marcia-Longa route" into the Fleimstal valley bottom as far as Moena. A challenging day-long ride with great differences in altitude and a rather Italian atmosphere. Distance: 65 km Altitude difference: 1800 m Ride time: 7 to 8 hours Difficulty: strenuous day-long ride Snack stops: Inns in Predazzo and Moena From the hotel take the "Städtlweg" path no. 10 to Fleckerhof. Here take the gravel track (no. 8) and then trail no. 10 towards "Häuserer". At the junction take the road to Obereggen for approx. 1.5 km past the valley station to the access road to the Hotel Sonnalp. Overcoming the very steep gravel track no. 9 to the Laner Alp is a challenge. From here it's a more leisurely ride over the wonderful alpine pastures of Obereggen to the Zischg Alp at exactly 2000 metres above sea level. From there head downhill on a great descent to Pampeago and then descend by a further 1200 metres to Lago di Tesero. Directly by the cross-country skiing stadium (venue for the Nordic Skiing world championships in 1991 and 2003) turn north onto the cycle path towards Moena. At the halfway point in Predazzo it is worth stopping for lunch at the Hotel Ancora or the Sass Maor which serves a great plate of spaghetti. In the main square in Moena - opposite "Ciesa de Comun" - is the start of the old road 519 to the Karer Pass. Once you have completed the initial asphalted part of the climb, the route heads into the somewhat cooler forest and, continuing uphill, along an excellent forest track to the highest point of the pass between the Rosengarten and Latemar mountains at 1750 metres above sea level. Make sure you stop and enjoy the panoramic view! Continue along the main road to the famous Lake Karer. Immediately after the lake turn left onto "Templweg" (trail no. 8) as far as the Bewallerhof. From there either return via the road to Eggen or along the "Sam" trail. |

The WEISSENSTEINRUNDE route (bike and pray…)
A moderately difficult day-long ride along the pilgrimage route to the famous pilgrimage site of Maria Weissenstein. The route is peppered with beautiful viewpoints and great downhill stretches. Distance: 40 km Altitude difference: 1,200 m Ride time: 6 hours Difficulty: moderate day-long ride Snack stops: Weissenstein and Petersberger Leger In Eggen take Städtlweg to the Fleckerhof, then cross the road and turn right steeply uphill along the asphalt track past the farm. Pass by the "Bühleler" to the Weisshof and by the lovely meadows to the Latmorer. Head uphill for a short distance on the asphalt road to Rauth and directly behind the inn of the same name take the "Tremmlweg" (trail no. 8) on the same level as far as Schwarzenbach. Follow the marked route no. 8 as it climbs gently to Kasbach. The route now becomes more demanding, as, still following trail 8, it climbs steeply uphill to the Bielhof. A wonderful view of Deutschnofen and the back of the Rosengarten rewards your exertions. From here the route runs somewhat more easily over the luge track towards the Laab Alp and just before arriving here turns left onto the forestry trail, which is a relatively leisurely stretch to Neuhütt at 1800 metres above sea level, the highest point on the journey. Following marked trail no. 9 to the right, a long descent awaits us, which offers a superb downhill stretch at the end (trail no. 9S). Maria Weissenstein is at 1500 metres above sea level and is South Tyrol's largest and best known pilgrimage site and a place of great mystical significance. Make sure that you visit the church and the original Chapel of the Virgin Mary inside. The many votive tablets are also well worth seeing. Follow the old pilgrimage route towards the Kehr inn (no service!) to just before the Deutschnofen ski lift. Here turn right uphill back to trail 8 and then follow the same stretch - but with new views - back to Eggen. Alternatively it is also possible to take the road back towards Bolzano and then pick up the road to Eggen by the Hotel Mondschein.
