Happy on two wheels... is what we have been ever since it became possible to explore the mountains by bike. There's absolutely no question about it: mountain biking is one of our favourite sports, and for 4 years we have been able to share our passion for it with our guests. Tracking down new routes with secret pathways and challenging trails time and time again is one of our greatest pleasures in life. Rosengarten-Latemar: next year this area will become South Tyrol's first biking region… In 2009 everything will be in place and we'll have the first biking region in South Tyrol with signposted routes and many more advantages - and we can't wait!
Where on earth is Eggen? Even a local might ask this question, and our tiny village is, quite simply, in an ingenious location: only a quarter of an hour outside Bolzano, nestling between sunny meadows and woods at the foot of the fantastic Latemar and well away from the hurly burly of everyday life.
When we first started to plan our hotel, we - as passionate mountain bikers - were convinced that we had found just the right base for all occasions here in Eggen, and here's why: on a long day, you can circumnavigate the Schlern, on a short day, there's the Niger Pass circuit to the Rotwand, on a hot day visitors can head into the shady Karer forest and under the Latemar peaks, on a cold day they can ride out via the Eggen Valley on its sunny side to Obergummer, and on wet days, down to the Bolzano basin, plus much, much more… Every day is an adventure!
We're always up for a climb... We offer 3 rides per week in 2 ability groups, with the more difficult ride being led by your host, Manfred, and the easier one by your hostess, Carola. One guided ride costs €25.00. At the start of the week we coordinate our rides to suit our guests' wishes. To begin with we are merciful with our choice of route, but then we slowly ratchet up the difficulty to either a circumnavigation of the Latemar or the Eggen Valley circuit. To make sure that everyone gets their money's worth, we ride in two groups. Additional rides and bike technique training are offered by Gerhard's Bike Academy. On Tuesdays we recommend you take a Bike Academy bike technique training class, of which there are varying levels of difficulty. Copies of the weekly schedule are available in the hotel and you can register for the courses in reception up to as late as 7 pm on the night before.
Snack stops! Simply delicious! ... Eat well in one of the many huts on the alpine pastures and let the mountain scenery take effect. The two groups' different routes converge again here, meaning that there's a chance for a bit of "bike chat"! Those who don't feel as if they're working at full speed can switch to the "Extreme" group, and those who want to finish up on a more leisurely note can join the "Gourmet riders". Whatever happens, the next meeting point for everyone is the Marica's sunny terrace for a mountain biker's get together with a snack and a refreshing beer!
